It's easy to get distracted by the design of fixtures and fittings when renovating a bathroom. But, you don't have to consider whether they are practical. Taps are a prime example of this. We can become so attached to the look of the taps that we forget about the need for water pressure. We'll be discussing water pressure and how it relates to central heating systems.
What is a low-pressure tap?
Everyone is concerned about how we use natural resources. Water is a key part of this agenda. You can make your home eco-friendly with low-pressure taps that use less water.
Low-pressure taps are best paired with low-pressure central heating systems. These systems usually include systems that use instantaneous or immediate water heating systems. A gravity-fed system is one example. This means that a cold water storage tank is located in the loft, while a hot water cylinder is located elsewhere in your home, usually in an airing cupboard.
Gravity feeds water around your home by using gravity. You'll find that your water pressure is usually higher at the bottom than at the top. Gravity-fed water systems have low pressure and typically pressures around 0.5 bar.
Low-pressure taps can also be required in combination systems ('combi’). A combi boiler can be mounted on the wall. It does not require water storage tanks. The system heats up cold water instantly from the mains. It means there's no hot water left unattended or waiting for hot water to come on. Combi systems are a great way to save water and gas. They are becoming more popular in the UK. A combi system's pressure is usually between 1 and 1.5 bar.
A high-pressure tap could be used in conjunction with a low-pressure heating system. This would cause water flow to be disrupted and impact the pressure elsewhere in your system. Water flow can become inconsistent and unsatisfactory.
